how organic are you?

What factor do you take into account when you’re doing your weekly groceries?  Do you try to eat healthy? And by healthy does it mean to be organic?

I’m not really into organic things but when I shop for food, especially for my kids, I always make an effort to read the ingredients in its contents.  I always try to avoid food with preservatives, antioxidants, colors and flavors enhancers. I will always put the package/box back into the shelves if I see lots of number in it.

There’s nothing wrong to be organic either.  I would like to be totally organic devotee if I can afford it. But, the thing is organic stuffs are much dearer than non-organic it’s a fact.  So how far should you go to be organic?

I found this information about what foods you should buy organic and which you don’t need to, which I think is very helpful.

According to Andrew Weil, M.D these are foods that you should buy organic if you can:

  • Celery
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Blueberries (Domestic)
  • Nectarines
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Spinach
  • Collard Greens/Kale
  • Cherries
  • Potatoes
  • Grapes (Imported)
  • Onions

And foods that you don’t need to buy organic:

  • Avocados
  • Sweet Corn
  • Pineapples
  • Mangoes
  • Sweet Peas
  • Asparagus
  • Kiwi
  • Cabbage
  • Eggplant
  • Cantaloupe (Domestic)
  • Watermelon
  • Grapefruit
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Honeydew Melon

So, at least you have  choices here.  It would be perfect if you could grow your own veggies and fruits plus couple chooks and maybe a cow….:) 🙂

  1. sayangnya organic itu mahal mbaa ahahah..tapi baru kerasa beda banget kualitas veggie di LN sama disini..biar gak organic tapi kok kalau diluaran lebih fresh aja gitu.
    ohya kalau kale aku sering beli yang organic pas disydney kemaren soale suka aku campur buat smoothies plus agak murah harganya karena beli di toko vegetarian gitu mba. gatau juga kenapa bisa murah dibanding di coles or woolworts .udah si itu aja yang lain aku pikir selama fresh aku cuci bersih (walau tauu deh udah beneran bersih apa gak ahahah ) ya beli aja.. ;p

  2. Iya Nis, seperti aku tulis itu organic itu memang lebih mahal. Makanya kita pilih2 aza mana yg lebih bagus organic dan yg ga perlu organic seperti di daftar itu.

    Iya bener aku sekarang kalo beli sayuran levih sering ke farmer market gitu, lebih murah dan yg organicnya pun msh murahan daripada kalo uda ditaro di Coles or Wollies. Pada dasarnya, sepanjang less chemical and preservative/coloring etc it is much better for our body 👌🏻😀

  3. Aku gak beli organik tapi nanam sendiri gak pake petisida. Belom tentu bener2 organik, soalnya tanah nya kan aku gak tau. Aku baru baca buku soal makanan yang buat aku terhehehe soal organik. Tapi yang ironis yah mba, aku dah cerita soal ibu angkat ku disini kan? Yang terkena kanker? Beliau tuh bertahun2 kira2 30an thn semua organik makanannya trus semua bahan2 kosmetik sampe bersih rumah tuh yang purely eco friendly. Yoga, olahraga setiap minggu. Gak minum alkohol, teh dan kopi.Pokoknya bisa dibilang the healtiest lifestyle. Tapi kena kanker juga. So, it made me think, just need to enjoy food and life. 🙂

    1. Aku juga ga selalu beli organik Dine, beberapa juga kita tanem sendiri si spt tomat, sweet corn, broccoli, etc.

      Iya aku i get baca cerita tentang ibu angkat-mu Dine, kasian ya. Ironic emang ya, temennya temen aku juga ada yg kasusnya seperti itu, we never know si. For me, at least I try to reduce chemicals thing y in a food, and processed food but anything else is moderate cos like you said, we need to enjoy food and life too👌🏻

  4. Waaahh terima kasih banyak Ria buat informasinya. Sangat berguna ini. Sekarang aku lagi rajin nanam herbs dipot, karena mencoba kebetuntungan nanem bunga gagal haha. Lumayan juga bisa ngerasain basyl, mint,buncis, rucula, tomat metik sendiri. Sejauh ini yang baru numbuh itu. Yang lain2 masih belum keluar kembangnya. Aku ada beberapa sayuran yang langsung beli dipetani karena rumah dekat lahan pertanian, sekalian beli telor ayam juga disana. Sayurnya langsung metik dikebun gitu trus ditimbang. Ngelihatnya seger banget. Kata mereka sih organik, tapi aku ga tau juga ya 🙂 yg penting dicuci bersih aja, soalnya kami sering makan sayuran mentah.

    1. Sama2 Den. Just moderate aza lah, ga perlu semuanya organic ya ga si. Buat aku yg penting itu, mengurangi processed food dan package ones, terutama buat the boys, less chemical is better, me think😀

    Aku udah sebisa mgkn ikut pola hidup sehat per tahun 2010 mbak waktu masih kuliah tp berhubung dana terbatas, ya disesuaikan aja lah 😀 biasa deh yg sehat pasti mahal tp itungannya lebih murah drpd perawatan di RS. Antara ekonomis dan pelit sih ini wkaka xD

Ge sebenarnya hidup sehat mungkin bisa lebih murah si spt dengan byk makan sayuran/buah, tempe, tahu, masakan rumah, mengurangi jajan diluar yg kadang kita ga tau bener cara masak atau bahan2 apa aza yg ada di dalam makanan tersebut. Banyak minum air putih dan mengurangi soft drink…lebih murah kan?😀

        My challenge for now is not having enough time to peel the onions or apples hehehe

    kalo sayuran emang berusaha beli organic tapi gak selalu. liat2 harganya yang organic kalo lagi promo baru blei. huahahaha

    1. Bener Man, gw juga ga semua organic pilih2 aza, mahal bok! But I think the most important thing for our family to have less preservative and any chemicals in our food and less sugar too unless it’s from fruits and vegs. Kadang mau hidup sehat itu perlu usaha juga yak😀

  7. I have been trying to go organic since the kids were born. Sekarang2 harganya udah ga semahal dulu kalo disini. KArna makin banyak juga toko2 yag jual sayur, buah dan daging organic, jadi kalo makin banyak competition makin murah, makanya banyak orang yang makin beli yg organic. There are a lot of meats here that came from farms which are not using antibiotics, hormones and also grass fed animals. Kalo untuk susu disini juga sapinya ga boleh pake antibiotic ato hormone, tapi gua masih beli organic juga:) Tahun ini udah mulai tanam2 sayuran/ buah sendiri, my biggest enemies are the squirrels and birds 😦

    1. Iya benar Gaareal disini organic stuff juga uda ga semahal dulu sih. Gw tiap Sabtu suka ke farmer market disini, mrk byk fresh dan irganic products plus harga lbh murah dibanding supetmarket.
      Kita juga nanem2 sih tapi mostly yg sering dipakai untuk masak aza, dan tergantung season. Atm, broccoli spring onion dan pok choy lagi panen😀 Plus kita punya ayam, mungkin besok2 harus piara sapi juga kali yak 😆 Iya Ga, itu yg pake hormon2 mengerikan ya. Well, at least we are making effort to live healthy!
